Many owners in the print and graphic communications have considered mergers and acquisitions to transform from "treading water" to "leading company". But if you haven't engaged in M&A dialogue, how do you start?
Get to know they neighbor. Meet other owners like yourself. Put yourself on the local map.
Take the case of Mary & Doug Matson, owners of A Copy World. Although A Copy World has been around since the mid 1970s, the Matsons have not pursued M&A opportunities among print and graphic communications companies in the greater San Diego area.
But having built a deep and loyal customer base among businesses, associations, and government entities, the Matsons have a lot going for them as they face challenges affecting many in this industry. "We're open to discussing opportunities for combining with a compatible partner," says Mary Matson, who heads up the sales efforts.
Over the years, they've gotten to know some local companies in the context of outsourcing sheet-fed printing. And they've provided color digital, b/w copying, and bindery capabilities to printers who appreciate A Copy World's quick turnaround, ethics, and quality.
To get to know their peers, the Matsons recently attended a local printer table top expo. There's no better way to open the door than in person introduction in the context of discussing synergies such as outsourcing work. With introductions and business cards in hand, the Matsons now have a broader circle of contacts.
To augment their existing and new contacts, A Copy World has asked NAPL to provide introductions to potential strategic partners.
What's next for Mary & Doug Matson? Casual get togethers over breakfast or lunch. Tours of other companies to see things from a customer's point of view. Relationship building.
Getting to know thy neighbors!
